משפט תנאי שלישי

משתמשים במשפט תנאי שלישי לתיאור מצבים היפותטיים בעבר שלא קרו, והתוצאה המדומיינת שלהם: לרוב מבטא חרטה או הרהור על העבר.

מבנה: If + past perfect, ... would have + צורה שלישית

• If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. (לא למדתי, לא עברתי)
• If she had left earlier, she wouldn't have missed the train.

דוגמאות נוספות:

• If we had known about the traffic, we would have left earlier.
• I would have called you if I had had your number.
• If he hadn't been so tired, he would have noticed the mistake.

שימו לב: אפשר גם להשתמש ב-could have / might have במקום would have, לשינוי גוון המשמעות: If I had trained harder, I could have won. (יכולתי לנצח, לא בטוח)
