העדפה ואזהרה: I'd rather stay, you'd better go
would rather = מעדיפים. אחריו בא בסיס, בלי to.
- I**'d rather stay** at home tonight.
- Would you rather have tea or coffee?
- I**'d rather not** talk about it.
- I'd rather walk than take a taxi.
כשאנחנו מעדיפים שמישהו אחר יעשה משהו, אחרי would rather בא עבר פשוט, גם כשמדברים על ההווה או העתיד:
- I**'d rather you didn't tell** anyone.
- She'd rather we came tomorrow.
had better = כדאי מאוד (ואם לא, יהיו בעיות). חזק יותר מ-should. אחריו בא בסיס, בלי to.
- You**'d better hurry**, or you'll miss the train.
- We**'d better not** be late again.
שימו לב:
- had better מדבר על עכשיו ועל העתיד, למרות ה-had.
- בקיצור 'd יכול להיות would וגם had: I**'d** rather = would, You**'d** better = had.
